Our Lady of Pontmain

Where:  Pontmain, France

When:  17 January 1871

On 17 January 1871, two boys Eugene and Joseph children of the Barbadette family were helping

Their father in the family barn. Eugene looked up at the sky and saw a beautiful lady smiling at him she was

wearing a blue gown covered with golden stars, and a black veil under a golden crown. The boy's brother , father , and the neighbor came out to see. Joseph said he too could see the apparition though the parents could not. They called Sister Vitaline , a local teacher who too couldn't see the apparition and called for two girls ,

Françoise Richer and Jeanne-Marie Lebosse, aged nine and eleven. The Sister suggested it was only the children who could see the apparition. A crowd soon gathered to pray as word quickly spread throughout the village. As they prayed the rosary , they saw the garments stars multiply till it was almost gold. Then the children saw a banner unfold with the words:-

"But pray, my children. God will hear you in time. My Son allows Himself to be touched."

As soon as the people  heard these words aloud, they sang the hymn:- 'Mother of Hope', The virgin laughed and joined in the singing. When the crowd sang 'My Sweet Jesus", the Virgin's expression changed to profound sadness and she held a red crucifix with the words "Jesus Christ" on it. When the crowd began singing, 'Ave Maris Stella', the crucifix disappeared and the virgin's expression changed to happiness again. Towards the end of the novena, the apparition ended. It lasted for About three hours.

Our virgin is also called 'Our Lady of Hope' because the apparition stopped the Prussian's advance.

General Von Schmidt is reported to have said "We cannot go farther. Yonder, in the direction of Brittany, there is an invisible Madonna Blocking the way"
